Researching for music video: What I have learned about the state of the music industry

In my AS year we learned about the music industry and how with the coming of digital is declining. Music is becoming increasingly easier to illegally download that it has become basically not frowned upon.

We learned about Production. The actual making of the music from recording the music how it should sound to producing the music video. Now it is much easier and cheaper to make music/videos because the resources are widely opened to us. Years ago it would have take more time, effort, money and space to produce. Technology has advanced so much that we can produce from our own homes with our computers.

Distribution is how this music gets to the consumer. Before digital music use to be analog and only available in a physical copy. Nowadays the music formula has changed to account for people not paying for artists songs. From the diagram above you can see more digital copies are bought than cds. Artists make a bigger chunk out of live performance than ever as the track can be found free in its digital form. Physical sales such as cd's have fallen since the digital area as they are easier to freely download on places such as storage websites(mediafire) youtube with a converter peer2peer such as torrent websites.

Exchange and profit is the formula music companies use to make a revenue. People have stopped caring about copyright infringement and freely download, making it harder for the music companies and making them come ip with better formulas. E.G. Jay - Z's record deal pays him more money but take a higher percentage out of live performances.
