Some may say Gaga, Beyonce or even Kanye West have one of the best music videos known to man HOWEVER I believe differently....
MICHAEL JACKSON'S ‘Thriller’ is the best example of a music video form because it broke all normal conventions at the time. The concept behind the video was to create a mini horror film through a music video. This consisted of terrifying looking extras/actors who in sections of the video were also dancers. The 14 minute video illustrates the genre of gothic horror pop which is visually seen through the videos overall content.
‘It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes You're paralyzed 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night And no one's gonna save you from the beast about strike You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight’
This is an example of the lyrics Michael Jackson expressed in the ‘Thriller’ track, his team took on the idea of illustration, and hence the song tells the story of what is taking place visually in the video. In the video however, there is great use of close up shots on Michael who is undertaking the lead role. This is so that the audience get to see his significant change clearly as to how exactly he morphs from the normal teen into a zombie! Fundamentally though we see a lot of close ups of Michael due to his importance as a singer and actor in the video. Great deals of long shots are also used to establish the scene to the audiences view allowing them to understand the danger the actress is in.
In rhythm to the song the edits also make technical moves from one scene to another. Also the mise en scene reflects this by the light flashing and door slamming. The edits used in the video empathise on the sound & beat given off from the song. The tempo is also mirrored through the dancers and artists movement.
