Andrew Goodwin strongly believes that the "normal" narrative approaches to traditional stories do not exist in the world of pop vids, hence he(Goodwin) also adopts the view of Todorov.
There are various reasons for this one of which is because music video directors tend to not follow the typical convention of novels and films.
1) Pop vids are based around the concept of songs(ocassionally do NOT follow the normality - problem - resolution structure)
2) Pop vids use the artist as the narrator and also charactor
3) Often there is the approach of the performer looking straight at the camera (This allows the involvement of the audience to join the artist in his/her performance) A great example of this is Ed Sheeran's vid "You need me..." here Ed is not present in the early stages of the video however a sign language performer is narrating the songs content in sign. However, Ed is present at the close of the video revealing himself as the mastermind behind the song.
Pop videos rely a great deal on REPETITION. Very often these videos repeat images in the style of how the songs repeat choruses & lines. The repetition of songs is to enhance our familiarity with the artists specific genre. On many occassions this exposes the song to Tv, radio and hopefully *fingers crossed* advertisements.
In the production of music vids there are THREE TYPES OF RELATIONS these are:
2) Illustration - Where the video narrates the story of the song e.g "How to love" (Lil Wayne)
Here Mr Carter in his video narrates the stroy of his lyrics.
* Amplification - This is when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of indepth meaning.
Here Wretch 32 adds deep context to the concept behind his number one chart topping single "Dont got"
3) Disjuncture - Where there is little connection between the video & song. Video contradicts song majorly!
Here it is rather clear that "One + One" has nothing to do with the bare skinned Beyonce in this video.
