Photos from filming sessions

Here we have a sneak preview of EXCLUSIVE pics taken during our video shoot. We are in Shoreditch high street, the second location of the day. Ten minutes before then we were shooting at a secret religious location. In the pics seen above you will notice that my alter ego known as "Emine Parker" is performing her own rendition of 'heaven' in front of the cam whilst also getting helpful tips from the lovey Becks and annoyingly rude Ry.

P.s Now I understand just how hard it can be for artists and their production team when trying to produce an successful video, I mean if you witnessed the level of public disruption we experienced.

Anyways it was all in a good days work I guess! ;-)

My fave previous student vid

This is my favourite previous student work which was done within the academic year of 2008-2009. The song is by one of my all time have rappers...YEP!

You guessed it!... Nas (thats in line with Kanye West though)!

I enjoyed the video in particular because it was obvious that the group had taken part in a fair amount of research in relation to the rapper, songs context and the songs genre. As a result, their research payed off and left them with a near Tv worthy music video. The use of edits such as jump cuts and angles was understood to a great level that the video came across as professional. The video was shot in a 'fish eye lens' style, which appeared to look so realistic that it was even a shock to find out that the camera person had used their bare hands throughout the whole filming :-(

Emeli's official website

Emeli Sande's official website is a portrayal of her character & the kind of ora she adopts in her art. In this I mean there is the sense of coolness and simplicity adopted in the style of the webs design which also reflects greatly on the way her management team want her to come across to the audience.

Emeli also known as Adele Emeli Sande is an well educated 24 year old who studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. As a Scottish R'n'b & soul recording artist and songwriter Emeli has recently been signed to Virgin records after a long graft behind the scenes of the music industry.

Due to her early life, there is a sense of strength & stability that is illustrated as the facade behind her art. As she can be said to be different from the typical artists seen in the music industry today, her website is evident of this. Emeli limits the info shared on her and only includes art related information, such as diary, youtube pages, twitter & shop. Compared to other artists today Emeli is very much true and respectable in aspects of her private life and art. Emeli's music updates are very clearly updated as a link on the homepage of her website and if she is followed on twitter her music is documented as to what she's recently acoustically performed to her latest single and so on.

Since the AS practical work I believe that my skills in terms of research have developed because I am now confident enough to do independant research that is relevant to my topics context. As a Media student during the last year and so I have grasped alot from the course. In terms of understanding the media and music industry I have now got a great deal of knowledge of just what lurks within the unseen in these sectors. From the recent sales decline to the ground buggling debate on free music downloads. Before I was unaware of just how severe things had got in the music industry. I have personally developed as a student and person in terms of discipline to be able to update my blog with relevant info, in these blogs I have been able to evaluate clips and discuss a range of topics that were taught in class in relation to the subjects modula and include some other handy extra bits that'll give me some extra marks. In terms of learning, more than anything I have enjoyed being able to analyse music videos in depth and understanding the type of technology used to produce them and there purpose. This I do find useful as it allows me to be insightful with the descisions I make for my upcoming project(s). Due to this new found analytical attitude of mine, I can now nearly easily identify the type of camerwork, editing and sound used in various mediums.

Main target audience

Above I have clearly established the target audience for our music video.

Skills audit: Research

Since the AS practical work I believe that my skills in terms of research have developed because I am now confident enough to do independant research that is relevant to my topics context. As a Media student during the last year and so I have grasped alot from the course. In terms of understanding the media and music industry I have now got a great deal of knowledge of just what lurks within the unseen in these sectors. Due to this new found analytical attitude of mine, I can now nearly easily identify the type of camerwork, editing and sound used in various mediums.

Plan 3rd day of filming.

Third day of filming, we are going to be filming in Victoria docks, EastLondon. We have chosen this location as it has a spectacular view over London. There's a high walk bridge, which allows us to get shots we could only get if we had a plane, the bridge is an advantage. Whilst picking this location our group visualised shots of the main character looking over London, representing her in an angelic way, it will appear as she is seeing everything, embracing the scenery, also whilst lip singing then ending of the song. We plane to film on a blue sunny day, we want to get shots of the sun through the cloud, this isn't a must do, just a preference we will be checking the weather forecast in advance we will pick the day with the best weather.

Filming: Day2.

Day two of filming was a great success we filmed within the Shoreditch region, and Brick Lane, East London, we recorded our main character Rosetta, lip singing in front of Shoreditch church and over places, overall we were happy with the footage we recorded this day. The weather was how with imagined blue skies with the sun shining, this enabled us to capture them defining shots with the natural sunlight on the character and scenery, we recorded scenery shots, the sunlight created that 'heavenly' feel to the 'Heaven' Video. As well as recorded Rosetta the other character was introduced, this character is a subsidiary character, the singer is playing the role of her guardian angel, representative of the lyrics, this is a theory introduced by Goodwin.

Copywright clearance of summer potential music video choice

Here was a video that I personally wanted to remake, before my group thought it be unsuccessful.

The state of the music industry today & tomorrow

The music industry is not as it was the before. Things have changed. With this change has been the development of technology. In this I mean that ever since the first creation of the downloading site 'Napster', there has been a great increase in how people gain access to music. People have started and still remain to retrieve music without paying a price! Due to this music outlets have now had to suffer the consequence of shutting down. Wondered what had happened to your local HMV store? Well, because of you or our growing bad habit i should say rather, many owners of such stores have had to shut down and even minimalise there number of outlets.

What should we do? What should be done to tame such behaviour?

Well, the solution for some record labels and artists is to increase the prices of live events and as a result invest in artist merchandise in which will be sold at concerts and online also. This is what is done now by many artists however though, many others do not have enough of a fanbase to even pitch such an idea. For artists such as Jayz, U2, Take that, Eminem and Madonna this would be different as they have had fans over the years of different ages. Take Take that for example a great percentage of the fans are stereotypically women who are not in contact with the digital age.

Irrespective of the digital age issue,  another growing problem in the music industry is the damage of reality talent shows such as the Xfactor. Shows such as this have been branded by music lovers as "the tradition that kills music".

You do the math here!

Artist Image

Well we all know im not as light in complexion as this girl however, though her make up can be imitated. As the performer for the music video I'd like my image looking somewhat similar to that of the make up artists in the tutorial above. Her smoky eyed look is just right - not too much, not too less. Just right!

Test shots of actual performer

Here are some test shots of the performer who is also in our group. Her name is Rosetta & she will be undertaking the role of "Emine Parker". Rosetta will suit the image of our music video as she will be professionally made up by a make up artist who has been given a brief on Rosetta's own initial idea of how she wants to be perceived in the video.

Original video

In the original video Emeli focuses on the stereotype that underlines the concept behind 'heaven', however, we will also be doing this but in a cultural way that will also include different races and religions. We will be including a range of "different" people in our video so we can clearly signify our theme of uniqueness and originality. We feel that in the original video, only one form of heaven was perceived to the audience and this was the Christianity form. This is why we seek to add a twist to our own video, hence our groups made up of different people of differing race and gender.

Three music vid influences

* We will be adapting to the style of focus that the camera used for this video. This will be fully promoting the image of the artist.

* The reverse shots & repetition used in the production of this video are what we seek as a group to replicate in our own video. This we will do to allow the audience to become familiar with the artist and the symbols that  pop up in the video.

* 4.22 into the video we will be using the same camera techniques that were used.

Final song choice

We've decided to remake Emeli Sande's version of 'Heaven' because we feel we could be really creative with this video & also challenge ourselves artistically. Emeli's video is very illustrative in the way that it sticks to the thread of religion, however, when we shoot our video we will be following a concept of multiculturalism as one.

Laura Mulvey's ideas on representation

In relation to representation in music videos Laura Mulvey stated in 1992: “In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly.”
Here Mulvey is basically outlining the fact that today’s outlook on life, especially in relation to the entertainment industry, is quite obvious that there is a distinguishing divide between the male and female. The male is stereotypically heralded to focus himself on the ‘curvaceous’ woman, who is purposefully made up for his viewing.
Representation of women often discovered in music videos today are based on Mulvey’s outlook. Women are dressed provocatively for the male attention. Good examples of this are female artists such as Nicole Scherzinger, Beyoncé Knowles and Shakira etc.
However though, representation itself consists on many aspects. These aspects include gender, place, ethnicity, age, sexuality, class and so forth. In the preparation stages for an artist’s appearance their image would’ve been closely considered. This consideration would’ve involved a range of things, from the style of the artist’s hair to their choice of outfits. As artists ourselves, we’d then initially deconstruct this representation & interpret what we see in our own personal understanding. In this, we then become familiar with representations in videos for specific artists/bands.

Dizzee Rascal ‘Holiday’ – In this video there is a large scale of female dismemberment. Breasts legs bums etc., all that’ll entice a man on a woman is on show.

Missy Elliot ‘All N my grill’ – Here a different aspect of woman is played before the audience. Missy’s persona of being a “female boss” is put forward to the viewer. We see a clear narrative of female empowerment against men, something that is seen very rarely in todays videos.

Planning for music video: Test Shot of potential videos visual concept.

This is a mood board which was put together in class this shows the image which we want our performer to have therefore is the test shots of the performer, we already have our assigned performer 'Rosetta' as she suits the image well we are able to take inspiration from these test shots to work on her image.

Planning for music video: Audience.

One of the task given was to create an audience, therefore I'm going to introduce a character which fits the stereotype of the audience we aim to attracted.

First of all our artist is a female from  East London, she is in her early 20's and is a respectable role model, her songs include lyrics which regard religion, her emotions through different stages of her life, her nationality and how it was growing up in London, living in London, and the in's and outs of her experiences and timeless love. She is confident, as expected as she has grown up in a not so wealthy family and has been determine with her music career although she is a strong character she isn't intimidating. She is well known for some of her drum and bass collaborations and songs she has featured in with grime artist.

Our typical audience is a head strong teenager, who has ambitions but is also street wise, the type of hobbies they may enjoy is dance/ singing, likely to live in a diverse area so they are familiar with a variety of cultures and can identify with the topics our artist expresses through her music. The audience is likely to be sociable but also hold a commitment to family or a religion.

Images which help you visualise our audience:

Planning for music video: Letter for copy right clearance.

This is the letter in request for copy right for the song our selected song 'Heaven' by Emeli Sande, we emailed EMI record label, the label our artist is signed to and we are still waiting for a confirmation or a reply.

Planning for music video: Analysis of 3 music Videos which influenced our final plan.

James Blake Wilhelm scream:

As you can see our group was watching James Blake's 'Wilhelm Scream', we were taking notes on the editing and analysing this music video as it stood out amongst others we researched, the editing is simple and the mis en scene pretty much is the same throughout, how ever the simplicity of the effects is breathtaking, the edit well suits the music for example when the key changes, the blur haze which is on the camera appears to disperse like rain hitting into a puddle, the editing is captivating and we highly hope we can imitate this in our final music video.

Lily Allen 'LND':

This music video, influenced our music video as its located in London, the narrative is following the artist journey around London which we are considering doing, other than the fact it is in London, the concept is original and is pretty inspiring, as our aim is to focus on the beauty of London, this video shares that similarity, although it is showing the grotty side to London, it also focuses on the beauty and creates an almost fantasy world, which we want to create subtly not as strong as the 'LND' video yet still portray its beauty, and tour the London streets.

Wiley 'Numbers in action':

The editing in this music video influenced our plans, the editing works by side of the beat, it is well thought out along with the mis en scene for example the lyrics tend to suit the what's happening visually. The intelligence which went into this music video, is which inspired us the most, we aren't literally taking aspects from this video, yet we appreciate the thought and planning that has been put into this video, there's a variety of edits such as rewinding and also the use of props, the setting is pretty simple but despite of the simplicity of the location the audience is never bored as theres a lot going on, hence this inspired us to put alot of thought into the mis en scene and also edit along beat to the music and at times it's exciting to visually follow the lyrics just like in Goodwins Theory.

Planning for music video: Shortlist of locations.

Here's the moodboard we previously made in class this includes the locations which we plan to use and gives a sense of the mis en scene regarding location.Locations which have been included.
Gainsborough Studio, Greenwich, Victoria Docks, Portobello road, Dalston, Regents canal.

Planning for Music video: Final Song

Emile Sande - Heaven
As a group we felt that out of this video we could be the most creative. We all felt it was the one we all related to the most. The artist is British which filled our requirements. The artist is quite new and isn't known by everyone so we could make the most of our own ideas. We could all imagine how we wanted the mise en scene of our video to be.

Planning for music video: Story Board.

This is one side of the story board which I drew up in class. Myself, Ryan, Sam and Rosetta discussed shots and locations then decided on orders on which we would arrange them, this is our first draft and have swapped some of the shots and included different ones from this first draft.

Planning for music video: Examine Website of artist.

Whilst looking through Emeli Sande's website you can't help but notice the colour scheme, classic simple black and white, I thought this could be for a few reasons first of all it reflects her nationality being a mixture, also the simplicity allows her to be taken seriously as an artist and is portrayed as pretty mature, the theme suits the music video 'Heaven' she is also wearing black and is mainly covered her gender isn't being exposed for the male audience, likewise to her image in her music video, this sows her character is mature and pretty modest, and her image is consistent.

As seen in this image above, she is being promoted by websites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace these are the main social networking sites, hence this ensures people who use these various sites are able to access her music, also her music will be linked by each site and will be abled to share, therefore more people are likely to come across her music, ensuring a wider fan base.
The audience are able to get access to information for her tour dates and websites where they are able to order a signed copy of her album, which suggest she cares about her fans to take time out to be signing. The fact she has a Twitter also made me realise the fans have a personal update on her where about's and her interest, she can inform them with her updates this allow she fans to have a more intimate relationship with herself.

I saw the title Diary, which comes across as personal, straight away her persona is seen as real and pleasant, information such as her gigs and dates are in this section of the site. This site also includes contact numbers and email addresses showing the access is pretty open and the her fans can easily achieve their intentions through using this  site, weather its ordering a cd, booking a ticket or just getting her twitter to receive her updates.
