MoodBoard - Image Of Artist.

During the discussion with my group for how the image of our artist will look, we had a few disagreements. So I decided to do my own mood board for how I would like the image of the artist to look.

The mood board above shows how I personally would want the artist to look.
The mood board below shows fashion ideas for the artist.

Fashion Moodboard for performer

Here Rosetta along with the rest of her group came up with the idea of many media related characters, who would suite the style md genre of our video. The concept of the real video is Christianity. However, we do not want to copy this idea but keep it and then further elaborate on it. Rosetta will not be copying these styles shown in the mood board above but she will get some ideas fromm here for her own outfits she will be wearing with the approval of her group members.

Research: technical skills during AS year

During the start of teh AS year I was not a technical sort of person, so when my class was introduced to some technical devices I was taken of guard a bit.

Some of the devices we used were:

* JVC cameras( We used these cameras to film footage that had the potential of being used in our
finishing thriller product)
* Memory cards
* Blogger(We used this to document our planning process)
* Final cut pro(This we used to edit the thriller footage we had from filming)
* Soundtrack(Here we added a soundtrack & title to our finishing thriller product)

There were more skills and technical skills developed but i cant really remember. LOL!

Research: best music video in the world.

Some may say Gaga, Beyonce or even Kanye West have one of the best music videos known to man HOWEVER I believe differently....

MICHAEL JACKSON'S ‘Thriller’ is the best example of a music video form because it broke all normal conventions at the time. The concept behind the video was to create a mini horror film through a music video. This consisted of terrifying looking extras/actors who in sections of the video were also dancers.  The 14 minute video illustrates the genre of gothic horror pop which is visually seen through the videos overall content.

‘It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes You're paralyzed 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night And no one's gonna save you from the beast about strike You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight’

This is an example of the lyrics Michael Jackson expressed in the ‘Thriller’ track, his team took on the idea of illustration, and hence the song tells the story of what is taking place visually in the video. In the video however, there is great use of close up shots on Michael who is undertaking the lead role. This is so that the audience get to see his significant change clearly as to how exactly he morphs from the normal teen into a zombie! Fundamentally though we see a lot of close ups of Michael due to his importance as a singer and actor in the video. Great deals of long shots are also used to establish the scene to the audiences view allowing them to understand the danger the actress is in.

In rhythm to the song the edits also make technical moves from one scene to another. Also the mise en scene reflects this by the light flashing and door slamming. The edits used in the video empathise on the sound & beat given off from the song. The tempo is also mirrored through the dancers and artists movement.

Personally I think ‘Thriller’ would always be my favourite video because it technically tells a story through the instruction of the song. The visual is very much done in a gracious manner with a high use of prop and the edits just add an effortless finish to the video. The dance routines performed in the video are so iconic that they are even performed and talked about 20+ years on. More than anything this video will always be seen as more than just a promotional film but an act that is known to occur in movies all the time.

Research: Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin strongly believes that the "normal" narrative approaches to traditional stories do not exist in the world of pop vids, hence he(Goodwin) also adopts the view of Todorov.

There are various reasons for this one of which is because music video directors tend to not follow the typical convention of novels and films.

1) Pop vids are based around the concept of songs(ocassionally do NOT follow the normality - problem - resolution structure)

2) Pop vids use the artist as the narrator and also charactor

3) Often there is the approach of the performer looking straight at the camera (This allows the involvement of the audience to join the artist in his/her performance) A great example of this is Ed Sheeran's vid "You need me..." here Ed is not present in the early stages of the video however a sign language performer is narrating the songs content in sign. However, Ed is present at the close of the video revealing himself as the mastermind behind the song.

Pop videos rely a great deal on REPETITION. Very often these videos repeat images in the style of how the songs repeat choruses & lines. The repetition of songs is to enhance our familiarity with the artists specific genre. On many occassions this exposes the song to Tv, radio and hopefully *fingers crossed* advertisements.

In the production of music vids there are THREE TYPES OF RELATIONS these are:

2)  Illustration - Where the video narrates the story of the song e.g "How to love" (Lil Wayne)

Here Mr Carter in his video narrates the stroy of his lyrics.

* Amplification - This is when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of indepth meaning.

Here Wretch 32 adds deep context to the concept behind his number one chart topping single "Dont got"

3) Disjuncture - Where there is little connection between the video & song. Video contradicts song majorly!

Here it is rather clear that "One + One" has nothing to do with the bare skinned Beyonce in this video.

Function of a music video

The main function of a music video is to predominantly promote the image of the artist through the production of a short film that will accompany the artist’s song. Occasionally, these videos are created for marketing purposes that are purposefully targeted at the increase of recording sales. Music videos date from way back but came into significance in the 80’s due to MTV’s existence, where they were referred to as “filmed insert”, “film clip”, “promotional (promo) film” or “promotional clip”.
Ever since it’s dramatic stamp on the careers of artist’s music videos have undertaken a range of differing styles. Such as animation, non - narrative approaches (abstract film), live action filming and also documentaries (short tour diary – Rihanna ‘cheers’). However, though many styles are often adopted at the same time for example action and animation can be used just like it was in the Pink’s video of ‘feel good’.

This is the latest Rihanna single straight off of her 'Loud' album, the footage used here is promoting the "funness" of her tour as we see her on stage, on the tour bus & some of her fans singing along to her tune. This approach is also adopted by other artists.

Moodboard: Location.

For the many concepts in our video we have come up with location ideas. These ideas are the first we've come up with and do at the moment follow the message we want to showcase in our video. Before we finalise our locations there is a great need to access the areas for safety reasons.
